Marketing Intern

Location: Headquarters, Washington, DC.

Department: Integrated Marketing

Supervisor: Coordinator, Integrated Marketing

Compensation: Unpaid. Students are encouraged to seek funding through their academic institution or outside sources.



Defenders of Wildlife is a leading environmental non-profit organization, dedicated to the protection of all native animals and plants in their natural communities. The internship is an opportunity for an advanced college, graduate or post-graduate student to collaborates with both integrated marketing and development to support Defenders’ fundraising objectives while gaining valuable fundraising experience across a variety of channels and programs utilized by a large non-profit organization.



    • Develop a new staff resource to introduce new staff to marketing’s processes

    • Assist with the in-house matching gift and workplace giving processes

    • Review and offer edits to fundraising copy including offline and online programs

    • Draft targeted event or action-alert copy and support routing through program staff

    • Work with Cause Marketing partners on creating cross promotional materials

    • Research best practices in mobile text programs and create a proposal for enhancing our mobile program, including how to track program effectiveness

    • Document Facebook and Twitter stats for a list of specific topics over the year

    • Help read and sort member mail provided via our Member Services program

    • Work with Member Services Manager to inventory in-house items

    • Review our eCommerce platform including testing and some copywriting

    • Under guidance from Government Relations, package and deliver member constituent petitions to Administration and Congressional offices



    • Create photo album of wildlife pictures taken by camera traps on donors’ property

    • Assist with tasks related to donor record-keeping and database maintenance

    • Research a list of top donors or board members

    • Help develop Defenders fact sheets and/or PowerPoint presentations


  • Education:  Current student pursuing an undergraduate or advanced degree in marketing, communications or nonprofit management

  • Experience:  Background or interest in work with a non-profit organization preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Strong writing, editing and content development skills

  • Ability to prioritize multiple competing tasks and effectively meet deadlines.

  • Self-motivated and independent with an ability to see a task through to completion.

  • General tech savvy, experience with Microsoft Office and social media platforms.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.


  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so.

  • Start dates are flexible, but applicants must commit to working 32-40 hours per week as an intern.
