Digital Copywriter

Location: Headquarters, DC

Salary Range: $50,000 - $57,000 annually 


Defenders of Wildlife is a leading environmental non-profit organization, dedicated to the protection of all wildlife and their habitats. The Digital Copywriter is responsible for drafting and editing online fundraising, advocacy, cultivation and ecommerce copy, primarily promoted via email, as well as engagement content on, our blog and Defenders’ social media channels. 

This position collaborates with all departments to develop online copy that will engage our members with the primary purpose of generating unrestricted revenue. This hands-on position will require thorough knowledge of digital copywriting best practices and an understanding of digital fundraising.


  • Under direction from the online fundraising team, develop and edit fundraising emails, action alerts, ecommerce copy, cultivation emails and targeted emails (as needed) with the goal of generating unrestricted revenue.
  • Responsible for circulating copy for review by the appropriate program staff as needed and working with the team to balance edits for accuracy with the need for fundraising.

  • Under direction from the online engagement team, draft and edit blog entries and other online copy with the goal of keeping our online constituents informed and engaged.

  • Conduct research and fact checking as needed on a variety of subjects including the Endangered Species Act, American wildlife and public lands, this includes attending regular programmatic meetings to keep up with current Defenders work.

  • Participate in creative brainstorming and strategy discussions related to our online content and organizational voice.

  • Work internally and across departments to maintain a consistent constituent voice across all channels, audiences, etc.

  • Support the marketing department with ad hoc writing requests and general editing and proof reading tasks.

  • Adhere to organizational voice, online style guide and editing procedures.


  • Education: Bachelor’s (B.A./B.S.) degree, preferably in marketing, advertising, communications, English, or related.
  • Experience: 3+ years of copywriting experience, especially fundraising copy. Writing samples will be required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.

  • Ability to accomplish multiple tasks on a number of concurrent projects

Desired Qualification:

  • Passionate and knowledgeable about wildlife, environmental and conservation issues

  • Background in email copywriting

  • Knowledge of digital fundraising



  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and communicate with others while doing so.
